Passing the hat is one of the greatest experience artists of any field and origin deserve. Personally I have observed that this practice is commun to those artists that present their work in the streets or bars. Far from it are those artists which because of some notoriety hide themselves behind agents and confortably receive a parcel of the entrance without looking to the guests eyes.
The art of passing the hat around is the imediate feedback the artist receive from their expectators. It does not necessarily mean that a full hat is the measure of the artist sucess. I would say that the art of the hat passing round is the most democratic representation of the show. It is indissociably part of the show.
Poor expectator are those who pay without even know if the show correspond the expectation.
